Welcome back! If you haven’t read my first blog post yet, please click here.
In my second post, I really want to drive home the importance of awareness. It really is my first and most valuable secret. Tune it! Notice! What’s your body telling you? Listen to it! Your body tells you everything you need to know. Trust it to tell you.
Think back to days in your life...1) to days you’ve felt tired, unmotivated, impatient, easily irritated, not able to perform how you need to perform. Remember those days where you were simply surviving. Remember the brain fog. Now think even harder about the choices you made in those days and the day prior to them.
Now, think back to days in your life… 2) to days you’ve rocked it. Days you felt great. Days you were in such a good mood that nothing could get you down. Days your body was working for you, not against you. Days your mind was sharp and clear. Days you had enough (maybe even extra!) energy. Now think even harder about the choices you made in those days and the day prior to them.
Notice anything? Connecting any dots? On those days or in the days following did you ever even stop to reflect on how the choices you made on those down days, optimal days and the day prior to each, affected: ✦your mood ✦your energy ✦your ability to cope and be less reactive ✦your motivation ✦your body’s health ✦your mental clarity ✦how you feel ✦how you function ✦your drive
My first plea to you, is to TUNE IN
Connect A to B.
Connect your choice → how it makes you feel.
If you’re reading my blog because you’re interested in change, then I’m calling you to first become AWARE of the things about yourself you’d like to change (Don’t say weight. That’s secondary. That’s simply a symptom of your choices. Dig deeper. Look at the things I listed above if you need ideas.) AND to become aware of the incredible mind, amazing body and beautiful soul you’re motivated to change. Feeling like you’re worth the change is probably another story… we can save that for future posts.
Do you want a concrete way to implement this tip about gaining awareness? Start a journal. And no… I’m not going to say a calorie-counting food journal. Bleh. Start a journal to document your whole day’s As and Bs. What I mean by this is… write down everything you do (A) and everything you eat (A) and then take it one step further and 1 hour after and 3 hours after each choice and yes, even 24 hours after each choice… jot down how you feel (B). I know that through the years, if I’d actually written it down (I do it mentally ALL. THE. TIME.), I could look back and see very obvious trends (I do this mentally ALL. THE. TIME.). Here are some I’m aware of and how they would have looked in my journal. Let them inspire you to write down EVERY choice, from little, to big, to everything in between.
2:15 ate candy containing fake food paint (red dye #40) ======>
2:22 Headache. Ugh. (my body - let me be the reporting guinea pig because my body is super sensitive AND because I’m very aware and tuned into my body - does not like chemicals that shouldn’t be deemed edible)
Chicken breast and sweet potato for supper ======>
Oh my goodness... huge energy burst (true story - ask my husband. I became hooked on this simple, very simple, meal because of it’s hugely positive effect on my body’s energy). I had no choice but to go be productive! It gave me the energy!
4:45 handful of M & M’s ======>
4:58 SUPER IRRITATED with my kids about trivial things they’re doing that normally wouldn’t bother me
Milkshake for dessert from fast food restaurant (I sure don’t make this awful choice anymore! It’s another thing I’ve permanently moved over to the “I know better and will always do better now about this one” list!) ======>
Phlegmy throat. Dairy gives me cold symptoms! And drags my energy level down for 2-3 days. Never again.
Cold meat with nitrates ======>
I seriously feel very aggressive, like I could easily go punch a wall to solve my problems. That’s uncharacteristic of me. ... However, when I’m altered by chemicals…. I feel things I wouldn’t normally. Red dye, nitrates, aspartame, and even dairy (though it isn’t a chemical). Dairy makes me feel very pessimistic, down, sluggish, you could even say… depressed. My body is irritated with me for eating it, therefore I am irritated. Always great when I know a dairy slip up cloud is lifting. I begin feeling like my optimistic happy self again!
Qi Gong in the morning ======>
More energy in my day. No coincidence that doing Qi Gong = a more energy-filled day. (more about this in a future post)
Qi Gong at night ======>
More restful night’s sleep.
Deadlift on Monday night ======>
Back feels stronger and I feel more powerful in general. NUCCA adjustments hold for longer amounts of time (more on NUCCA coming soon)
Before NUCCA adjustment ======>
Telltale left knee pain and lower back pinch on right side.
After NUCCA adjustment ======>
Sinuses open up. I can reach the peak of my breath. Knee and back/hip pain disappear immediately
After acupuncture ======>
I feel lighter. (during one particular run the day after an acupuncture appointment I seriously felt like I could just fly away across the corn field I was running by, I felt that weightless and cleared out... whereas three days prior, my whole body felt like it was filled with concrete. ...hmmm… could have been the pizza ranch pizza I ate two days prior to said worthless run - mental note to not eat that shit ever again - I finally learned and will move that over to the “I know better and will always do better now about this one” list!)
Husband ate a salad with a grass-fed beef patty on top ======>
He decided that his planned nap after some big days at work didn’t seem necessary anymore! Instead, he had a very productive afternoon.
5 year old son ate a sucker (red dye!) while our family got haircuts. ======>
It was like someone flipped a switch on that kid. He went from agreeable and easy going to difficult, stubborn and restless. He seriously got a different look in his eye too!
I was fatigued one particular day. Didn’t eat my typical preferred lunch. ======>
Ate some bacon fresh off the griddle before we sat down to eat supper and it perked me right up! It was exactly what my body needed!
I suppose it’s time to wrap this post up. I want to leave you with this…
Tune in! Your body will tell you what it wants. Learn to tune in to its subtle whispers… listen now before it needs to throw off loud disease-like alarms. If you truly listen in and analyze, you’ll find all the answers and solutions to feeling your best and running at your optimum level. Go out and kick ass at life!
I am a wife, mom to two and teacher. I have a lot of things I'd like to go after in this lifetime!
